This morning we packed up and took a shuttle back out to the airport for our first interisland jaunt with Aloha Airlines. These flights are open seating and have a limited drink service. The fact that they bother with drink service on a thirty minute flight was amusing. We weren't even in the air long enough to turn on electronic devices.

We landed at the tiny airport near Lihue on Kaua'i and took the shuttle to our Alamo car rental office. "Go out these double doors and look for the sign that says SUV. Pick any car in the lot, the keys are already in it. Drive it to the guard at the gate and sign the form."

Simple enough. A bit odd that they just leave all the cars unlocked with the keys in it. Apparently, crime isn't a big issue on Kaua'i.

We drove to our deluxe condo. The roads on Kaua’i are pretty simple. Supposedly there's traffic just north of the airport around Kapa’a but we were headed in the other direction. There's only one highway that circles the island. You just drive until you find an intersection - and nearly all the intersections tell you what city they lead to.

The condos on Kaua’i don't typically have air conditioning because the air is so nice. Ours was no exception that rule, except it was damn hot. We opened all the windows and took off most of our clothes - it was still hot. Hot! And sticky! We thought, "Oh, no..." But we went on with the day, crossing our fingers for cooler nights. The lady at the front desk gave us directions to the grocery store. "The" grocery store because there's really only one and it's in Koloa. It's about a 20-minute drive back to the K-Mart / Macys / Sears mall complex near the mall but these people consider that to be unbearably far.

The groceries were a bit expensive but not terribly outrageous. Here are some examples:

  • 64 oz Gatorade - $3.85
  • 15 oz Cheerios - $2.99
  • half gallon OJ - $3.89
  • Ritz Crackers - $2.75
  • Welch's Grape Jelly - $2.59
  • 60 pack ziplock sandwich bags - $2.79
  • box of Triscuits - $3.49
  • half gallon of 2% milk - $2.89
So nothing too unreasonable, except the milk was a bit of a sting (which we were warned about).

We drove back to the condo and started our first load of laundry. We sat out on the lanai, soaking in our proximity to the ocean while Amy ate her dinner (California rolls from the grocery store; Damon had already eaten a sub). We were playing on the computer for a bit when Amy looked up and noticed that she could see the Milky Way. We didn't need to let our eyes adjust for 10-15 minutes, we just had to look up and there it was. It was amazing.

There was a little walkway near our building where some other people (from Indiana) had gathered to look at the stars also. It was a beautiful sight and even around 8 pm we could still see regular shooting stars. Quite a sight.

The evening breezes did indeed bring cooler temperatures into the condo. We settled in for a nighttime movie, "Speak," before fatigue set in. We listed to the sea spray against the rocks beneath our window and drifted off to sleep.
